An insulated patio ceiling is a permanent, weatherproof roof — double-roof rain protection, insulation, downlights, a seamless indoor look. A louvre roof is adjustable: open for sun, closed for shelter.

The one question that decides it
Do you want the option of open sky, or do you want a sealed room? Everything else follows from that. An adjustable louvre roof gives you a roof you can open; an insulated patio ceiling gives you a space you can genuinely treat as another room of the house. Both are custom-made, both carry a full all-round gutter system, and both come in the same four finishes.

When the louvre roof is right
When rooms behind the patio depend on that light. A solid roof over a north-facing patio can darken a living room noticeably, and that's the complaint we'd rather you avoid than fix. Louvres let you open the blades for winter sun and close them for summer shade — the same roof doing two opposite jobs across the year.
When the ceiling is right
When the goal is a room. If you're planning to enclose the patio — now or in a couple of seasons — the ceiling is the correct starting point, because it's insulated, sealed, and specified to have doors and windows added to it. It's also the answer for a deep patio that runs hot under plain sheeting, and the natural home for recessed downlights.
The middle path most people miss
You don't have to choose for the whole property. Plenty of homes end up with an insulated ceiling over the section that became a room, and a louvre system over the braai or pool area where open sky is the point. Because everything is made to your measurements, two systems meeting cleanly is normal work rather than a compromise.
