Chromadek® vs Aluminium: Which Awning Material Is Right for You?

Both materials are excellent — we guarantee both. The choice comes down to budget, guarantee length and finish preference.

Chromadek® vs Aluminium: Which Awning Material Is Right for You?

The short answer

Aluminium carries our 15-year guarantee and is naturally rust-resistant. Chromadek® — a colour-coated steel — carries a 10-year guarantee at a friendlier price. Both are available across our louvres, IBR awnings and ceilings.

The case for aluminium

  • 15-year guarantee — the longest we offer
  • Naturally corrosion-resistant, ideal for low maintenance
  • Lighter structure with clean, crisp profiles

The case for Chromadek®

  • 10-year guarantee — still a decade of cover
  • Meaningfully friendlier on budget
  • Proven colour-coated steel used across South African roofing

Colours are identical

Whichever you choose, the palette is the same: Black, Charcoal, Bronze and Traffic White — mixable between frame and infill. See the combinations in our gallery.

Our advice

If you plan to stay long-term, the aluminium guarantee usually justifies the difference. For rentals or budget-driven builds, Chromadek® is the smart money. Either way the gutter system, watertightness and workmanship are the same.

What the two materials actually are

Chromadek® is a pre-painted steel sheet — a factory-applied colour coating over galvanised steel. Aluminium is exactly what it says, extruded and finished. Both are legitimate choices for a patio awning in Gauteng; we build and guarantee both, which is not something every supplier does.

The practical difference is not "one is good and one is cheap". It's a trade between the finish you want, the guarantee period you want behind it, and where the system will spend its life.

Where each one wins

Choose aluminium when the awning is a visible architectural element — over the main entertainment patio, on a contemporary house where the frame sits alongside aluminium window and door profiles, or anywhere salt air is a factor. The extra five years of guarantee is the honest headline, but the finish is usually what decides it.

Choose Chromadek® when you need to cover more area for the money. A carport, a service courtyard, a large patio where the budget has to stretch — these are exactly the jobs Chromadek® was made for, and a 10-year guarantee is not a short commitment.

What stays the same either way

This is the part clients are often surprised by. The engineering doesn't change with the material: both get a full all-round gutter system with multiple downpipe outlets, both are custom-made to your measurements rather than cut down from stock sizes, and both are available across all four of our finishes. Our louvre systems are 95% watertight when closed regardless of which material carries them.

Maintenance

Neither material needs much. Rinse the surface when you're cleaning windows, and — more importantly — keep the gutters clear. On the Highveld the thing that actually causes problems is not the roof sheet; it's a gutter full of leaves and grit going into a summer storm. Check the outlets at the start of the rainy season.

Which should you ask us to quote?

Both, if you're undecided. Because every system is custom-made, we quote from your actual space — so asking for the same patio priced in aluminium and in Chromadek® is a normal request, and it turns an abstract material debate into two real numbers you can compare. Send a photo of the area with rough width, projection and height to get started.
