The brief
The complete conversion: an insulated ceiling with recessed downlights, enclosed with aluminium stack folding doors. What was a patio is now, simply, another room of the house.
What we built
The double-roof ceiling seals the weather out; the stack folders open the entire wall back up on summer evenings. This Kew project is the blueprint we show clients considering the full enclosure route.

The complete conversion, in the right order
Ceiling first, then doors. This project is the clearest illustration of the sequence we recommend for turning a patio into a room. The insulated ceiling is what makes the space usable year-round — insulated against summer heat, waterproof with double-roof rain protection, and able to carry recessed downlights. The stack folding doors are what make it a room.
Done in that order, each phase stands on its own. Plenty of clients fit the ceiling in one season and enclose in the next; because we specify the ceiling knowing doors are coming, phase two is an installation rather than a rework.

Don't forget ventilation
The mistake to avoid when enclosing fully: no way to get air moving without opening the entire wall. A couple of casement windows, top- or side-hung and draught-sealed, give controlled ventilation on a mild day. It is a small line item that changes how the room gets used.
