Our Kew project is the clearest illustration of what most clients in this part of Johannesburg are actually after: an insulated ceiling with recessed downlights, then aluminium stack folding doors to close the space in. Done in that order, a patio becomes another room of the house — without the mess, cost or timeline of building one.
The sequence matters. The ceiling is the part that makes the space usable year-round, because it's insulated and carries double-roof rain protection. The doors are what make it a room. Plenty of clients do the ceiling first and add doors a season or two later, which is why we specify the ceiling to be enclosed later even when doors aren't in the initial quote.

Older houses, deeper patios
Housing across Johannesburg East skews older, with patios often tucked under the main roof and running deep. Deep and covered means dark, which is the problem skylights solve — they drop daylight into the middle of a space while the insulated ceiling handles the temperature. Fixed glass panels do similar work vertically, dividing a space without walling off the light.
